What is Oracle

Since time began, people have yearned to discover the unknown and have desired to tap into information from beyond and receive answers to long-sought questions. Oracles were often believed to be portals through which the gods spoke directly to humanity. The word oracle is derived from the Latin verb “to speak”. It refers to a person who is speaking a prediction, considered to provide wise and insightful counsel or prophetic predictions, most notably including precognition of the future, inspired by deities. As such, it is a form of divination. Every civilization had its version of an oracle. The most famous oracles of written history are the Oracles of Delphi in Greece. In China, the use of oracle bones dates back to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 B.C.). The I Ching, or “Book of Changes,” is a collection of hexagrams used in oracular readings that also date from that period. For many centuries, certain tribes in Africa have used the tossing of bones to discern the future. Druids divined the future, conducted ceremonies, and acted as the spiritual leaders of the ancient Celts. In ancient India, the oracle was known as akashvani, meaning the “voice from the sky,” and was considered to deliver messages of the gods. In Tibetan history, oracles have played an important part in religion and government. The word oracle was used by Tibetans more in the manner that we refer to as a “medium.” The early Aztec migration myth revolves around a mummy, carried by four priests, that directed the journey via oracular guidance. A pronouncement by an oracle led to the foundation of Tenochtitlán, an ancient capital city of Mexico. The Mayan oracle priests, or chilanes, were considered actual “mouthpieces” of the gods. The Books of Chilam Balam were the work of one oracle priest who correctly predicted the coming of the Spaniards and the havoc that was then wreaked. In Igbo villages in Nigeria, oracles were female priestesses, usually living in a cave away from urban areas. They delivered prophecies in an ecstatic state to those who sought their counsel. Hawaiian oracles resided in high places, where the priests received messages from the gods. Throughout time, even beyond recorded history, oracles, seers, and visionaries have played an important role in every ancient and native culture.
